Backache and joint pain are common in pregnancy, and can occur from early on due to the relaxing effects of pregnancy hormones. Later, they are affected by the growing weight of the uterus, which also displaces your centre of gravity.
Backache and joint pain can be very difficult to deal with, especially as the only over-the-counter pain medication that is recommended in pregnancy is paracetamol – NSAIDs such as ibuprofen and diclofenac are not recommended unless specifically advised by a doctor who is aware of your pregnancy.
Wearing supportive shoes, maintaining good posture, sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees, heat packs, and warm showers or baths may help to relieve some of the aches and pains. A good massage may help, and try to avoid heavy lifting if possible.
Physiotherapy can be very helpful as well, and you can self-refer to a physio. Smiley/support belts for your belly later in pregnancy may also be of use.
