Pre-Eclampsia Signs & Symptoms

Please call your midwife straight away if you have any of the followings symptoms

  • A severe headache that does not go away with paracetamol and rest
  • Blurry vision, double vision, or seeing spots, stars, or flashes of light
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Pain in your upper abdomen on the right side, or shoulder tip pain
  • Baby not moving as much as usual
  • New-onset nausea or vomiting in later pregnancy, or feeling generally unwell
  • Sudden weight gain (more than 1kg in a week)
  • Sudden, new swelling in your face or hands

These can indicate that you have severe pre-eclampsia, and need immediate investigation.

Signs that your midwife will watch out for

  • High blood pressure
  • Protein in your urine

If these happen in your pregnancy, then your midwife will order blood and urine tests to confirm pre-eclampsia, and refer you to the obstetric team.
