Headaches in Pregnancy

Headaches are common in pregnancy, especially in the first trimester. The can be caused by many things, including pregnancy hormones, lack of sleep, dehydration, stress or tension, allergies, or sinus congestion.

Most headaches in pregnancy are caused by these things, but if you have a severe headache that is not relieved with paracetamol and self care, please contact your midwife as it can be a symptom of pre-eclampsia.

For tension headaches, a quiet dark room may help, and a cold compress on your forehead or the back of your neck may also help.

If you have headaches due to allergies or sinus congestion, sinus rinses, steam inhalation, and a humidifier to keep the air moist may provide some relief. Stay well hydrated to keep the sinuses moist. If these are severe or continue, please see a GP for assessment.

Paracetamol is considered safe in pregnancy, and you can take 2 tablets (1g) every 6 hours to help with headaches. If you are finding that this is not enough, please see your GP for more options.
