This is a blood test available from 10 weeks gestation. It uses a maternal blood sample and checks for cell-free foetal DNA. It can look for chromosomal anomalies and some gene mutations. It can also tell you the sex of the baby.
It is not funded unless you have a first trimester combined screen or second trimester serum screen come back with an increased chance result, and costs around $700 if you choose to have it electively.
It is a screening test, not a diagnostic test, so if it comes back with an anomaly then you will be offered diagnostic testing.
It may also detect genetic conditions in the parent who gives the blood sample.
